Renee, where to next?

It’s time to dig into another delectable dinner menu and this week’s restaurant doesn’t disappoint. Oak 12 is a restaurant that I have written about previously and promised to explore more. So get your cutlery ready to dig into this treat.

After my first visit about two years ago they launched a new location. The concept of this new location is relatively different from the original. In my opinion that’s feasible, and I’ll tell you why. Both restaurants while not entirely close to each other are not that far apart and I think offering a slightly different menu and aesthetic provides what a lot of patrons may crave, variety. One thing China doesn’t lack is restaurants and being different even in a small way can set you apart from the rest.

Both locations serve predominantly western cuisine. This location in my opinion provides more modern aesthetic with a touch of elegance. It also has an open concept of the kitchen that provides diners a glimpse at their meals being prepared. Its also a larger space with two floors. The main floor provides the dining and bar area for walk-ins. the second floor consists of private dining rooms, suitable for birthdays and other special occasions.

Oak 12, similarly to other restaurants in China that serve western cuisine, has the quintessential menu offerings. Whole roast chicken, spaghetti bolognese, creamy pasta, beef fried rice, steak and some sea food pasta offerings. But for Oak 12 they also offer a variety of elaborate milkshakes, at both locations. Some even come topped with a whole donut. If you have sweet tooth this will be a treat for you. It also serves as a great dessert along with the different cake options on the menu.

Its suitable for quick dinners when you are looking for a meal that will deliver good taste and not much fuss. Its by far not fine dining, but is suitable for date nights or just a quick meal of shopping or sightseeing by the River in Hankou.

A meal at Oak 12 for a couple can range from 150RMB to maybe 230RMB (USD$20-$31). It all depends on the quantity of dishes you select. It could be less it could be more. The price point in my opinion is not very expensive, but that’s my opinion.

The service at both locations was admirable. A friend had a birthday dinner at this location and they were very accommodating. The group wanted to stay longer than their normal closing time and they provided a server to stay with us until we were finished. Overall I give this location of Oak 12 an 7.5/10 recommendation.
