How to make the most of a long weekend

When the word holiday comes to mind you should think of China. They celebrate several holidays throughout the year, with holidays in about seven of the 12 months of the year. This holiday in question is called the Dragon Boat Festival. It generally occurs on the fifth month of the traditional Chinese calendar, which is a lunar calendar. So the date will vary each year.
As customary with a traditional holiday in most countries there a several different activities such as racing the Dragon boats which goes without saying. After all that is the name of the holiday. Each holiday or festival generally is also accompanied with special foods or drinks. During this time Relgar wine, salty eggs and Zongzi (made with sticky rice, various fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves) are consumed. Zongzi is also called Rice dumplings.

Technically this was just a 3 day weekend, since it was from Saturday to Monday. Nevertheless we are grateful for the time off from our busy work schedules. And gladly make the most of long weekends. Though that was my second Dragon Boat Festival since being in China, it was the first I was experiencing it somewhat. In 2020 as we all know we were all in lockdown so I had no idea that the festival was even happening. Having the opportunity to try the Zongzi and also the salty eggs was an experience that will linger forever in my memory. Let’s just say I’m not a fan of either but if I were to choose I’d go with the Zongzi.

After sleeping for a day and a half it was time to hit the road. Because I spent most of the holiday huddled up in bed, the decision was made to pack as many things into my Sunday. Was this the smartest thing to do? Ummmm I don’t think so. But alas I made it happen. Hence here we are exploring three different restaurants/sites in one day.

Our journey began early in the afternoon. First stop was Coffee Lab. Let’s just say the day began with dessert and I loved it. This spot was made for a photoshoot. The decor was just clean, modern and very aesthetic. It’s a small cafe that’s located in a real estate show room on the main floor and a museum with an art installation on the second floor. Coffee Lab only has drinks and small deserts on offer but most people I think only go there for the pictures because it’s just such an amazing space. After ordering a latte and a slice of burnt cheesecake it was time to explore and of course take pictures.

If you’re looking for a comfy coffee spot to unwind and just have a conversation with friends this is location is ideal.

Next it was time to move on to a location that offered real food. The hunger had set in by now after my impromptu photoshoot. So we journeyed to Oak 12. This restaurant was located about 30 minutes away in Hankou. It’s located close to the main road and also close to Line 6’s exit A. So it’s easy to find.

Oak 12 has a more western appeal to it. From the decor to menu options. The service was pretty good and my order arrived without any delay. The is venue has a private room for birthday celebrations. It’s clean, chic and modern with birthday setup/decor already done for you. It’s definitely somewhere I will be returning to or hosting a birthday celebration or something.
They now also have a larger second location with amazing food that I’ll review in another blog. So stay tuned!

This day wasn’t one that was planned ahead. It was a go with the flow day. But, the spots we went to were locations on the ‘want to visit list’. So the final stop for the night was a roof top bar/lounge, ‘The Rooftop’. If ambiance and spectacular views are what you want while you sip on a cocktail, this is no doubt the place.

It’s located also in Hankou, about 10 minutes by car away from Oak 12. And it sits above a hotel, perfect if you want to spend the night in Hankou. On offer was mostly wines and finger foods. But you are able to request cocktails and the bartender will be able to make your request. Well most cocktails can be made at your request. I had a Mojito and a Mai Tai. Both were delectable and absolutely refreshing. My visit was on a very hot humid night but I still chose to sit outside because the view was to die for. The lounge also offers private rooms if you want to host a small party. Each room can cost from about RMB3000 (about USD$430) upwards . And various drinks are included depending on the price point.

At the end of the day I was exhausted, the day was well spent but it was time to get home and relax and soak my feet that were just about swollen.

It must be mentioned that since the last dragon boat festival The Rooftop has gone under new management and is now called The More The Merrier. The renovation has been exceptional and the lounge has a luxe, modern relaxed vibe. With a brand new food and drink menu, the upgrade is looking ready for another review. Stay tuned!
Tips:
- Always have a list of prospective places to visit.
Planning ahead is always good. But if spontaneity is the order of the day, why not randomly select from your list of places you would want to visit and finally begin ticking them off the list.
- Always have a good meal. Keep your energy flowing. If you intend to be out all day you can’t be running on fumes. So make a good meal one of the first things in your plans for the day.
